Situated atop a hillside overlooking the left bank of the ancient Hausum River, Ortezzano is today a lively hamlet nestled in a striking landscape deeply marked by human industriousness. Today’s historic center has retained much of the original castle, closely adhering to the orography of the area, which in ancient times was its natural defense. The traces of the Middle Ages are perfectly distinguishable from miles away by the peculiar profile of the Ghibelline Tower. Within a very tight urban fabric, enclosed in the ancient city walls, narrow streets suddenly open onto small but seductive squares, revealing the presence of true architectural gems: churches, ancient palaces, imposing castle ruins, fifteenth-century dwellings that speak of the social life of those times, tell of the devotion, hopes, fatigue, anxiety of living and joys of the people of yesterday and today. Archaeology, quality agriculture, and well-maintained folk traditions (Ortezzano has no less than two folk groups and a folklore study center) might be good reasons to visit Ortezzano, but there are two things that make it unique in Valdaso: the Fishing Festival and the love of Latin. A love that has deep roots in giving birth to the famous Latinist Giuseppe Carboni, a love that is renewed every year in hosting young people from all over the world to try their hand at the famous Certamen, a love that during summer evenings transforms its center into a meeting place for classical culture.
